Jewellery is my second career and colour has been a significant factor in my work from the beginning. The elemental metal titanium is an ideal medium for me to use in the exploration of coloured surfaces and pattern.
The metal inspired me to undertake a research project, which combined art and science, to investigate the nano-scale geometry of the oxidised surface of titanium responsible for the colour appearance. I was awarded a PhD by the University of the Arts London in 2010.
The outcome of my research has fed back into my design and making by trialling new methods for achieving exciting coloured jewellery. In my work I use simple geometric shapes in order to emphasise the colour of the pieces. For me jewellery has to be comfortably wearable.
